What are some necessary evils?

Seems like the term "necessary evil" is used a lot lately. List some things that are necessary evils.

Pain is a necessary evil. I read a magazine article not too long ago about a little girl born with no sense of pain. While still an infant, she had gouged her own eyes so severly that she would be permanently blind, and had done many other terrible things to her body just because she had no way of knowing she had hurt herself. Pain is a great teacher, but we all wish we had a little less of it.

Democrats :)

I don't agree with them about 75% of the time, but I'm glad they are around to keep things balanced.

Here's to executive/legislative gridlock in this election!

Religion... I think religion and a sense of spiritual self is necessary.  The way it has been manipulated by the clergy through the years has all too often been evil.

Religion is the opiate of the masses, said Marx.  When used as such, yes, it is evil.  But I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet.
