Modern hip hop =/ = popular hip hop.  There's plenty of great music out there, you just have to dig deeper than what's on the radio.

That's completely untrue.  You obviously don't know much about real hip hop if you think that it takes minimal skill or talent and frankly I'm not in the mood to educate anyone today.

Probably because there are so few really talented hip-hop artists popularized these days.  It's more a collection of one-hit wonders who write nonsense, garbage lyrics and set it to a ripped off 80s sample that someone else already made a hit.  

I feel sorry for the kids growing up now who think this modern crap is real hip-hop.    

Exactly.  The true problem isn't the quality of hip hop, its the quality of hip hop that gets promoted and popularised.  As an intro to some of the more popular 'good' artists, rent Dave Chapelle's Block Party, which includes one of my fav artists, Talib Kweli.  He has one song that talks about the birth of his two kids that makes you want to say aww and nod your head as well.  He's better than Mos Def, imo, but you can also check out Black Star, their work together.
