Is "alot" becoming an accepted spelling these days? Not intended as a lame stab at Blue, I'm seeing it used all over these days, especially from American English speakers...

But like it or not, it's an important way that people evaluate the person doing the spelling.  It's the same with grammar; you can be the brightest person in the world but if you use bad grammar in your speech, people are going to assume that you're not particularly intelligent.  :(

if you care what people think of you...

You're the one who's always saying how you want to make lots of money, aren't you?  How to do you plan on doing that if people around you don't take you seriously?  :)
