What Schools would you take over UofT?
« on: September 22, 2006, 04:22:15 PM »
I am applying to top 5, but I don't have the greatest hope.

So, in your expert opinions: Why would I not go to UofT? What school should convince me to go to the US?

Should I forsake our great nation? I should probably tell you what I want to do, but I don't really want to.

So, without any knowledge of me or my desires, make appropriate decisions.

I'm wondering the same thing actually...wondering what US schools would convince me to leave Canada. Right now i'm thinking I'd only consider Yale, Harvard or Stanford. If I don't get in there (and maybe even if I do) I'd go to Toronto or UBC.

I'm interested to hear what other people think.

HYSC. Otherwise I'd really go to U of T.

None.
Toronto might be the best city in the world.
The tuition costs are better.
And if you ever do choose to relocate UofT has the reputation of being our "Harvard" and will give you tremendous pull anywhere.  On par with that of HYS.

By virtue of being a Quebec resident, I'd consider choosing McGill over UofT since it's just so much cheaper. But if there one place i want to be a lawyer in Canada, it would be on Bay Street. But I think I'd take any T14 in the US over UofT. But considering I won't get into UofT and probably not Mcgill either, for me it's UBC, Osogoode vs. American schools in the Tier 2. Being a lawyer in the states just seems so much more engaging than being one in Canada.

All that said, if I got into UofT and not McGill and not any of the very top American schools, I'd go to UofT in a jiffy.
THE LSN is here. PLZ post on my LSN profile.

I wish I had more fingers to cross.

I don't want to start a major argument or anything but:

1. TO is a great city but I think its a bit overly subjective (and Mel Lastman-like) to call it possibly the best city in the world.

2. Let's not carried away. UofT does not have the sway of HYS and is not on par with those schools in almost any meaningful way.

You are definitely right that going to UofT is a lot cheaper and you do avoid pesky visa and immigration issues, which are probably worse now in the post-911, illegal immigrant paranoid US. If you want to stay in Canada, then yeah, UofT is a no-brainer and its better than HYS.

I personally would take the upper half of the T14 over UofT with extra sensitivity for money offers. Hopefully in 3-5 months time, I'll be in a position to actually make that decision.

Downtown Toronto is fabulous, but so much more is happening in the US. Also, the weather in Toronto has been horrific last year.

Although the weather in Boston and New York is indeed god-awful as well - it being worse in Boston. Why are these good schools concentrated on the northeast?

Maybe bad weather is a sufficient condition for high productivity. I think, stradgirl, we have secured outselves a Nobel Prize.  ::)
