Why X Essay and Scholarships
« on: August 21, 2006, 01:39:59 PM »
Will writing a very persuasive Why X essay decrease your likihood of recieving merit based aid from a particular institution?

Say for example you wanted to go to Penn because your fiancee found a job in Philly, or say you wanted to go to Michigan due to a family emergency in Lansing.  Will revealing too much (ie tipping your hand) to admissions effect scholarship considerations?

Doubtful. Relationships break up. Family emergencies end. If they like you enough to want to give you a scholarship they are not going to withold it because they *think* you will go there anyway. The only way to screw your chances of merit aid is by applying binding ED. If you are contractually bound to go there they have no motivation to recruit you. A "why x" statement is not a contract!
