Who you "know"

Does this really matter?  In my situation, a Senator in Virginia is a very close friend of my family and has known me since I was a child.  Would his letter of recommendation carry more weight than a partner at my firm?  What do you guys think?

I am willing to pull all the strings I can to get in.  I know I will do exceptional in law school if given the chance, however, my LSAT practice scores have been pathetic.  I am taking the test in October.
