Does anyone have any suggestions as to some good scholarly writings to read? Im trying to improve my grammar and critical reading.

The LSAT often uses condensed versions of New York Times articles as reading passages.  So, even though it is a bull media source, reading the NYT might help you with LSAT-style reading.
