It's fine to get delayed until Jan.--although it's a bit lame for grown adults to have to go back to live with their parents--but the worst part is the fear that you won't be starting at all!
Yeah I feel for you guys in the class of '09. Nobody is safe. We're dropping like flies out here. But truth be told, a few of these 2010 deferment packages that some of you guys are getting sound like a pretty sweet deal. poo I'll take a year off of work for $75K while I go travel across the world and become a bar tender at some place in the Islands somewhere. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-it.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-it.Fortunately, I have a clerkship lined up, but if I were among those offered an optional deferment there is NO WAY I would take it unless I truly was not interest in working at a law firm. I would get my butt to a firm asap, try to pay off/ save as much money as I could, build relationships with partners who will protect me, and work as hard as possible. There is just no guarantee that a firm will take back the people who accept the deferment, and in fact if I were choosing people to cut I would rather not hire such people than fire hardworking associates....
