What "school supplies" are really needed for a 1L??

oh, right. sorry. I thought about this, too. honestly, outside of your laptop I wouldn't buy a whole lot outside of hanging file folders if you're planning on using a filing system of any sort, some writing pads (notebooks can be a pain to smoosh into an otherwise full bookbag, but legal pads fit quite nice), your favorite pens (i'm neurotic and will only use one kind of pen), highlighters, maybe some of those colored post it page markers to mark your case books for quick reference (these things are great, get some if you've never used them). Outside of that I wouldn't sweat it--leave maybe a small portion of your supplies budget for things you won't know you need until you develop your study patterns and then you can get it then

Get a disk on key and back up often.  I also recommend an external hard drive to do full scale weekly backups of your laptop.  Need to follow my own advice more carefully on that last thing...

This is exactly what I'm going to do.

Backup to 1gb memory stick nightly, backup to external HD weekly.

He sure got a raw deal on xoxo though.  I can't blame him for not coming around especially with people calling his phone to give him *&^%.  I was around when he was relatively popular on here with the really old crew.  He was good dude.  A little thick, but a good guy nonetheless.

Highlighters, pens, pencils, post-it flags, paper clips, stapler.  Pretty basic stuff.  Maybe some folders to organize things.  If you want one special thing law students need, buy nice bond paper as soon as you find a good deal for printing your resume.  It'll save a lot of stress when a deadline is coming up and you need to head to kinkos at 2 am to print it off, or you get ripped off for a ream when you need to have it the next day.
