The question is how would the number of words exceeded affect your application.  I doubt that less than 100 words over would be something to worry about.  However, 300 words in excess would make the reader question your ability to follow instructions.

Whose apps stipulate 50o words max? Just wondering. I'm only applying to Boalt and they say four pages double spaced max, so I reckon 3 is fine for them.

So we only have GMU listed?  I really do not think it is many schools. List them, you 500 word believers.

Ok, I found that Emory only wants 2 typed pages.. and you are SOL if you go over... but of course they do not mention anything about spacing.

Yale = 250, i believe this tells us everything we need to know.  i have read many Personal statements and only the short ones have held my attention.

Wrong.  Yale actually mentions that you should probably include the "personal statement that you included for other schools"  The 250 word essay is usually not a PS, but it could be.

I have mine at 761 right now, I want to get it to 700, but not sure I can without majorly altering it.  It is at 2 pages double spaced, Times New Roman, 11 point.
