are there different degrees of sin?  if so, which is worse?

If someone went to confession for things like that, I'm sure the penance would be very different.

There are mortal sins and venial sins. Sort of  like the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor.

is the belief really that even impure thoughts can be controlled? (i.e. you said earlier that "being" gay might not be a sin but acting on it is, as it's within your control to abstain)

Yes there are degrees of sin.

If I lie to you, that's not as bad as killing you.

Child rape is worse than concentual homosexual acts.

is that a catholic specific belief?  cuz other denominations do not believe that (ie southern baptists, presbyterians, methodists).

honestly, that didn't totally make sense to me when I heard it. I guess the idea is to avoid sitting around, fantasizing all day

I'm not saying I agree with or even understand  everything the Church says. I'm just trying to explain what I was taught

it looked like a weird, frozen smile. sort of like a "must smile. must not become violent, or cry, or try to turn the mike off. nope, gotta smile"

you think the wife is gonna come out and say the normal politician's wife speech: "i am standing by my husband and support him in every possible way."
