Housing in Orlando

Thanks everyone for the info thus far.

My main focus is safety right now moreso than good school districts;my children are just teething. What areas are best to walk around in at night? This is key because I will be going part time, i.e. in the evening.

Seminole county is really safe.  Lake Mary is like pleasantville.... but it can be expensive.

The only issue with "walking around at night" is that Orlando isn't really a "walkable town." If you just mean taking the dog out at night, most of the suburbs are fine. Basically, stay out of the west side (Paramore, Pine Hills, and Metro West soon) the northeast side of Sanford. There also is a fair amount of crime right around UCF simply because there are lots of targets (students). I think the Seminole County suggestions (Altamonte, Lake Mary if you can afford it, parts of Winter Springs) are pretty good ones.

i've been looking into the possiblity of living in the Orlando area.  i'm concerned about the spike in crime. how bad is it?  can someone from the area elaborate a little.  i ask b/c i do have a child that would be attending h.s. there & i would not want to move into an area where he would become a target.
is there a lot of gang activity, drugs, etc?
