Stormfront.org trolls for Northwestern
« on: May 25, 2006, 02:33:02 AM »
OK. So for some reason, i'm hooked on understanding what makes nazi F*@^heads tick. The thing I consume most greedily upon arrival is the southern poverty law center's intelligence  report.

So I looked on stormfront when I was trying to find evidence of panslavic soccer nationalism (and found some, too--a russian-serbian friendship from extremist footballers), but also saw this thread: http://www.stormfront.org/forum/showthread.php?t=145102

Is this secretly U Chicago students undermining northwestern, or is NW really a bastion of good national socialist folk?

That thread was chilling. Interesting find. I didn't go to Northwestern, but it is one of my top choices for law school, and this post doesn't change that. According to Hillel, Northwestern Undergrad is about 25% Jewish (with UC's being 14%), so the poster's statistics don't seem to add up. I think the poster really is a skinhead and is attempting make himself feel better about having been educated at a northern liberal elite university by pretending that it isn't :)

Ugh. I didn't realize what that link was until I'd already clicked it...just wait, I bet I'll get called into my boss's office next week for diversity training.

No way any of that bull#&%* is true though; Northwestern may be considered conservative by some, but it's nowhere near what those ignorami would describe it to be. Obviously, I will still be attending in fall of 2007.

it's conservative...

i mean bernadine dohrn from the weather underground teaches at the law school and they have that whole center on wrongful convictions.

but...

when i reflect on my undergrad experience, i think about matthew hale from the world church of the creator coming to visit campus and the administration responding very weakly...you know, even after one of their members killed our basketball coach.

and i can think of maybe a half dozen to a dozen instances where professors made really outrageous statements in class... like a political science prof saying "look, there are genetic differences, as a jew, i'll never be good a basketball." and then connecting that to why african american students weren't as successful as jewish students.  because we all have our racial strengths.  i still regret not walking out of that class...
anyway, that's anecdotal but, i do think it's pretty conservative.

My point is, it's definitely more conservative than a place like Yale, but I think even "conservative" colleges and universities are still generally going to lie to the left of society in general. Yes, there are probably bigots at NU, just like there are bigots (liberal and conservative) at a lot of other schools, but on the whole I think the conservative streak that runs through schools like NU, UVA and other places is beneficial; it facilitates a free exchange of diverse opinions and ideas, and like the case of your experiences with Matthew Hale and a racist professor, helps differently-minded people provide further rational justification for their own beliefs.

I'm pretty confused as to how Bernadine Dohrn made the transition to NU professor; my understanding is that she plead guilty to a number of extremely low-level crimes after her time in hiding...but I still don't see how that would make her a qualified candidate for teaching at Northwestern. I also heard she hasn't been admitted to any state bars...but she must have been admitted somewhere because she practiced with Sidley for a while. Does anyone know her deal?

And yes, it's bothersome that someone who actively participated in an attempt at violent overthrow of the government is in a position like hers. I would like to know more, if anyone has information.

I don't know, her CV describes some duties that don't seem to fall on many paralegals (drafting complaints/ consent agreements, starting and commanding pro-bono programs for a large firm, brief writing). She's described as an associate on a number of websites, though it's possible she was just some sort of consultant; either way, she had her JD almost 20 years before her time at Sidley. Wish I could find something unbiased though...I'm considering writing to her just to see what she says back.
