Oh come on it's not that far :)  I'm going to be making that drive every day the next 3 years.. ugh.  Or at least 4 days/week.

I took my kids over to SMU last weekend and walked through storey hall and the other one (not the library) where the classrooms are, it was fun.  I also noticed there's a crapload of apartments just across 75 on mockingbird.  Some townhomes too on the streets just south.

Sounds like townhome might be just the ticket for you.  I definitely saw some townhomes in http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=southern+methodist+university&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=50.51141,92.460937&ie=UTF8&ll=32.835174,-96.772143&spn=0.003299,0.005643&t=h&z=18&om=1

that area the other day.  Check realtor.com and see if there's any for sale.

i really don't want a roommie, so i've convinced myself i'd be better off renting than tying up too much cash in buying (though i still think i'd love to buy something if i could find something nice and still semi-affordable)

Buying is always better than renting, buying = get your money back afterwards, renting = throwing money in a hole.  If you can find some condo to buy that puts your payments on par with a nice apartment on a 30-year note, do it - you can sell it after school to someone with similar financial sense and get all your money back less the interest.

that's why i looked at condos near smu.
but they were all pretty crappy, in bad shape, in bad areas, and had been on the market forever.  seemed hard to unload, and i don't want to deal with the stress.

I can see that.  You'd think people would want to live in this area, maybe not.  That close to downtown seems like it'd be pretty desirable.

it's only 3 yrs.
not having the stress of yardwork and property taxes may be worth the loss of investment opportunity.
i'll worry about that stuff when i have an income again.

Makes sense.  I get to live at home with the wife & kids while I'm in school, so count on seeing me at campus 10-11 hours a day so I can study..  :-X
