I recently invested in an iBook G4 and adore it, too. I switched from PC and there are still a few things i can't do, but on the whole I think it's gorgeous. My question is: do I really need to have .mac to use isight? I don't get why. I have the camera and a broadband connection: is there any other way to use it without spending more money on a .mac subscription? It's been sitting on my desk waiting to be installed. I have to say, there aren't enough instrcution manuals for mac. I'm doing everything 'intuitively', but my so-called intuition is often lacking or, worse still, non-existent....

Nope, you don't.  It's not even a requirement.  I think you can use AIM software to do video chat.  All isight software comes installed in 10.3.  I think the .mac subscription just offers additional features, but I'm not sure.

I think you are confused about something...

iChat works with ANY aim account. You can sign up for a free AIM account and use it with iChat and iSight.

The .mac ID  that you pay for is ALSO an aim account...but there's no need for it.

It's AOL's instant messenger.  Just like yahoo, MSN, etc.
You can get it free from their site, I don't even think they spam you
if you use it.  But since it's AOL, I cannot stoop that low to use it.

I don't much like AOL either, but forking out £100 for imac is even less tempting. I will finally be able to connect my little camera! Wooooo!

If you have OS X, it comes with a program called iChat.
iChat is a free aim client.

You do not need .mac to use it. You can use any old free AIM ID.
