The "help Melanie pick out a new TV" thread
« on: May 08, 2006, 01:18:49 PM »
I have a lovely TV at the moment that I got for free.  My granddad passed away shortly before I was moving into my new place after graduation, and I was able to take his TV and VCR instead of buying new ones for myself, which was great.

However, two years later, this TV is slowly dying.  The screen has a nasty habit of scrunching up to be SUPER widescreen, so while I am still able to hear, only about 1/4 of the screen is actually visible for watching.

For now, this problem is temporarily solved for about 30 seconds to 5 minutes by hitting the sides or top of the TV, but it's been like this for almost 2 months and my lazy/cheap solution doesn't seem to be working as well anymore.

So now I need to buy a new TV.  I'm looking for something in the 26-30" inch range because my current set is 27" and I can't go much bigger than that.  I've looked at some stuff online but I really hate dealing with a lot of electronics research, so I'm opening it up to any electronics-lovers of the OTB to make some suggestions.  Discuss!  :D

Price range?

I'm ok as far as price goes.  I'm not averse to a flat-panel LCD, but with that, I couldn't go very far over $1000.  It's a long story, but I won't be paying for all of it if I go with an LCD.

I'm not really worried about the price as much.  I've been saving $$ for this ever since it started going wonky.

Melbelle - You may want to wait until after you've moved for LS - if you're not moving or have already move - no prob. then! TVs tend to not move well :( IE Mine broke when shipped via Fed Ex (and that was after surviving some serious trashing moving in and out of dorms :P )

Believe me, it would be excellent if this were a possibility, but I don't know if I can handle the summer without a functioning TV.  And actually, my parents and brothers will be moving me, so if they break my TV they can buy me a new one.

Wow Harvey, you always know exactly what I need.  :D

I doubt I will ever have need for a 65" TV... unless I have like a home movie theater.
