« on: May 06, 2006, 12:10:02 PM »
For jghall. Here's my top ten

1) Talib Kweli - Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought
2) Nas - Illmatic
3) Common - Like Water for Chocolate
4) ATCQ - Midnight Murauders: Better than Low End Theory IMO
5) BlackStar - Blackstar
6) Common - Electric Circus - alot of people hated this album, I thought it was fantasitc
7) Biggie - Ready to die
8 ) Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother
9) The Roots - Things fall apart
10) Jay Z - The Blueprint - better than Reasonable doubt IMHO

Honourable mention - Anything by the Pharcyde (Labcabin, Bizarre Ride II), Digable Planets (Blowout Comb and the other one who's name escapes me now), Common - Resurrection, ATCQ - Low End Theory, Outkast - Aquemini, Mobb Deep - The Infamous (Pre-sellout era), Mos Def - black on Both Sides, etc. etc. (I could go on for days)

Notable omissions - Dr. Dre - the chronic (good but not great), anything by Pac (IMO he went for quantity in his prime and sacrificed quality)

A lot of times these lists end up populated with "most important" albums or some old school rap that was hot for it's time.  The TOP or GREATEST albums should be the ones that you want to just put on all the time, listen to the whole disc, and just keep saying "man, this sh*t is hot!"  It doesn't have to be about the greatness of the performer, it's about the quality of the actual songs.  And of course, they have to be timeless.

Anyway, my definites (in no order):

Biggie - Life After Death
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
Tupac - All Eyez On Me
DMX - It's Dark And Hell Is Hot
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Tribe - Low End Theory

And I need to give more thought, but I'm considering

Snoop - Doggystyle
Fugees - The Score
Wyclef Jean - The Carnival
Outkast - Aquemini

Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back

Run DMC - Tougher than Leather

(I'm a sucker for real old school. I like a lot of newer stuff, like Common, etc, but I love the albums I grew up with.)
Columbia 2L.
