Need something to do this summer?
« on: April 30, 2006, 01:10:44 PM »
HeadCount just announced its Leadership Trainee program.

See HeadCount.org for more details.  Here is the jist of it:

This field internship will run from Mid-May to Mid-August, and offer intensive hands-on training in community organizing. And it all takes place in the most exciting setting in the world Ė concerts. Trainees will help run voter registration booths at all the major festivals this summer, while participating in other aspects of the organization and weekly conference calls and training sessions.

The program, which will be limited to six or fewer qualified applicants, will give you real-life experience and help prepare you for a career in the music business or the non-profit sector.

Candidates must live within reasonable traveling distance of the New York City, Chicago/Milwaukee or San Francisco areas.

The program will include the following responsibilities:

* Attending 7-10 festivals and concerts, some encompassing an entire weekend, as part of a HeadCount voter registration team (most or all travel expenses will be paid by HeadCount).
* Assisting a HeadCount team leader in planning and executing each event, including artist appearances and other creative activities that augment voter registration efforts.
* Proactively registering voters at these events.
* Other specific roles within HeadCount (such as marketing, publicity, Web development, operations), selected based on the interests and experience of individual trainees.
* Participation in a weekly conference call, in which various musicians, industry professionals and non-profit organizers will share their perspectives on community action and music.

The Leadership Training program embodies HeadCountís core belief that a few individuals, working in collaboration, can change society for the better. You will be asked to dig deep inside yourself, and to achieve at the highest level.

The emphasis will be on teaching, learning, and giving you an immediate opportunity to apply what you have learned. The HeadCount organization is committed to making the Leadership Training program a valuable, positive experience that will serve as an important stepping-stone toward a career in a related field.

Upon successful completion of this program, you will receive:

* A recommendation letter from the HeadCount organization.
* Additional career support, possibly including resume forwarding and direct recommendation to the many promoters, artists and managers aligned with HeadCount.
* A leadership role within HeadCount in the future, possibly including paid positions.
* Course credit if applicable.
* A confidential evaluation, with a detailed review of your strengths, perceived weaknesses and overall performance.

The most important thing to know about Leadership Training is that it will be hard work. Fun, rewarding, and an opportunity to gain great experience and meet important people in the music business, all while working on a very important cause. But itís hard work, and the performance standards will be very high.

We will expect and accept nothing less than full accountability and dedication at all times. At the end of this summer program, we hope to assist all of our Leadership Trainees with job placement in the music or community organizing areas, utilizing our extensive relationships in these very competitive fields. The demanding nature of this program will be the best possible training for these sort of careers, and we will accept nothing less than an A + performance from all our trainees.

If youíre reliable, dedicated and believe in citizen participation in democracy, then this is an opportunity to show what you are capable of.

If you believe you are up to this task, we encourage you take the next step.

If you think you're ready for this challenge, please send a resume and DETAILED cover letter to leadershiptraining@headcount.org.

I am one of the regional team leaders for this organization, and had a great time doing voter registration in 2004.  Head Count is totally non-partisan.

I definitely need something to do, but I don't live anywhere near any of those cities.  :-\

It looks like a good opportunity though.

I had a ton of fun doing this for 8 months in 2004. Unfortunately, I went to 80 shows that year and graduated from college and took the LSAT.  I don't recommend doing that!
