Ugh I made her cry...is that good?
« on: August 05, 2004, 02:35:18 PM »
Okay I finished my personal statement...so I think. I'm really tight with one of the law professors a So Cal school, so I met with her the other days so she can give me tips on my personal statement. She STARTED CRYING! I was thinking ot myself what the flaming  hell? She said it was really good and it touched her soul. I'm thinking I should have someone else read it. Maybe she's sensitive? She gave me some suggestions and told me to make some minor changes in regards to verbage etc... Mind you I wrote like 6 drafts of my personal statement already. What do you guys think?

personally, i think personal statements that play on emotions rather than present facts wont pass a lot of adcoms.  not to say that your ps doesnt present facts or present good arguments, but the fact that it made someone cry shows that it may be too emotionally charged than it should be.

but thats just my 2 cents...

I agree with dsong.  You need to find an emotional balance.  Enough to show you're genuine, and so that you don't bore the hell out of adcoms with a dull dry statement, but not so much as to over dramatize situations or make you seem *overly* emotional.

I would, however, have a couple of other people read it (that aren't very close to you...people that know your story aren't the people reading it this fall.  Find some at work that you trust or an acquaintence) to see if they also felt like crying.  You could just have a very emotional professor.

I'm a cold-hearted emotionless bastard who only cries on rare occasions (e.g., when I've been kicked in the nuts, or after watching Titanic). I'd be happy to read your PS and let you know if it's too emotional or if your prof is just a psycho.

id like to read it too... im not convinced you cant raise strong emotions as long as they are grounded in important facts of your life.  of course you could worry we will steal your ideas, but it sounds like my target schools are way different then yours, and my PS is already unique and finished.
