Moving

For all of you that plan on moving (or have already moved) long distances, what is the most affordable way of doing this?  I was looking into renting a U-Haul truck, and they want $3,000+ for the rental. That is freaking insane, IMHO.  Anyone else know of a more cost effective means?

$2,888 for Penske.  Los Angeles to Nashville is a long way and all, but come on, that's just freaking insane.  seriously.

I plan on selling my big pieces of furniture and throwing my prized possesions into a rental minivan(Budget rentals for 900 included extra insurance) and hitting Ikea/Target when I get to Chicago from Seattle.

I am moving to either Seattle or Oregon from Alaska. At least $1,800 for the van, plus gas and perhaps a trip on the ferry. I just started a savings account solely for moving expenses.

When I moved after leaving college, my school's alumni association gave me a 50% discount with a moving company. It was a pretty good deal (probably cheaper than U-Haul).
