I always thought France was at war with Britain almost non-stop during that period and just followed that whole "enemy of my enemy" logic.

Well, one can hardly blame the insurgents in Paris...After all, the French government's actions are only breeding more insurgents.

this is a very imperfect analogy. 

now if these were belgian protests against the presence of the french army in belgium, it MIGHT be different.

but then i'd just pick at something else.
