Those of you bringing your car in from out of state, what are you doing about your auto insurance? Are you planning to give them your new address and get it officially changed, or are you going to "pretend" you still live at your home address and are just in MI temporarily?
In my case, I'm very happy with my car insurance -- they offer the lowest rates of all -- almost half of what the next closest company charges, and I don't want to change it. Only problem is, they're not nationwide, and they don't operate in MI. I was wondering what would be the ramifications of not changing my address, or possibly changing it to my parents's address (they live in CA as well). I know MI has different insurance regulations from CA as far as the types of coverage, so would I get in trouble?

I am getting Michigan car insurance (mostly because I own my car and now own a place in MI so I think someone might notice). They have pretty different car insurance regulations so it might just matter when/if you get into an accident. For example, Michigan is a no-fault insurance state so if you are in an accident you always file with your insurance company, regardless of who is at fault - if CA isn't that way I'm not sure what happens in the event of an accident. Have you priced a quote in town? Some places give you a big discount if you do renter's insurance and car insurance through them (where rent insurance is basically free). The quote I got from State Farm was pretty competitive and since I'll be 25 in 6 months, then it'll be real cheap.

Owning a car is pretty cheap in Michigan, (e.g. cheap license plates, no safety inspections, etc.), thanks to the auto industry. It might be worth it to register here just for that.

Is NY a no-fault state? If so, there probably won't be much difference.
