"Specialty rankings" vs. General Rankings
« on: March 25, 2006, 02:26:29 PM »
If you had a certain area of law you knew you wanted to go into, would it be better to choose a school based on "specialty" rankings, or to go to an overall better ranked school?

I really have no idea, and that's why I'm posting this question.

Depends on the ranking range you're in (ignoring other importing factors such as $$$, environment, etc.)

So if you're talking top 14 schools, than General Rankings may matter more. If you deciding between schools ranked 50-100, you should probably consider specialty rankings.

I'd be wary with using specialty rankings...Franklin Pierce is a top IP school, but you're still better off with a T14 school thats not ranked high in "IP rankings"

Personally, I've looked at the US News specialty rankings and I do not feel that they warrant any consideration whatsover...

Yeah, though if you are an average T3 or T2 student, specialty rankings matter quite a bit.

definitely general.  you may change your mind about what you want to do, and if you're at a lesser school in general, you may be screwed!

i think with the t14 aside, the one exception would be environmental law where the specialty rankings matter (but a t14 not on the list would still be better than the top schools on the list)
