Not so sure I want to go anymore...
« on: July 31, 2004, 07:12:11 PM »
Well, I start school in less than a month and I'm really not sure if it's the best idea to go to law school.

I just graduated from college and am not sure if this is really what I want to do. I'm sure it'd still be good to go to law school, but long term I really don't see myself being a traditional lawyer.

So I guess what I'm wondering is if I should back out now, or just go through with it. I already have a lease signed, but haven't gotten loans disbursed yet, so there would be some complications.

any thoughts? or is anyone else in the same position?

Is it too late to defer admission?  It sounds like you should take (at least) a year off and decide.  Law school is a huge commitment (both time and money) and I wouldn't want to take it on without being sure.

As Jan says, law school is a tremendous investment of time, energy, and money. And I believe we've all heard that it is one of the more difficult things you can do with three years of your life - the first of the three especially. If you're having doubts, then you put yourself at even greater risk of underperforming. Depending on how studious and/or naturally gifted you are, that could mean anything from minor adversity to disaster. So I'm with Jan; I would call your Dean of Admissions on Monday morning and inquire about a deferral. If it's possible, give serious thought to deferring, and taking some time to have fun and to explore other options.

Don't go.  Law school is miserable enough for those who actually want to be there.

I would definitely look into deferring, but this late in the game, I wouldnt' get your hopes up for it.  It seems that if you ask early on (mid june at the lastest) schools will generally grand a deferral.  But you're talking two weeks before classes, all becuase you're just not sure now.  That means the school will have to scramble and try to fill your spot off their waitlist (if they even have a waitlist still going) and there's a good chance that your seat will just go empty.

If you can't get a deferral, i'd say you should still go, and give it a shot.  If, after a semester you decide you hate it, then leave.  I mean, you could just be having cold feet, and if you don't go, you'll never know.

I wonder if it is cold feet?

I have debated whether or not I should go for weeks now.  I probably will even more as it gets closer.  But like Jacy suggests, if you don't go, you may always wonder "what if" and regret that decision.  At least give it one or two semesters.  You may love it and know it is absolutely where you belong, right?

I'm not sure either.  I figure, I will sink my first semester's tuition and see how it goes.  Like other people have said, I don't want to look back and say "what if."

If I quit after that, think of it has a lost investment.  No big deal.  10-20K is a small amount to lose if you think of how much you will make in your life time, regardless of what career you pursue.

Yeah I'm scared too.  I just received my orientation packet today in the mail and it has finally hit me:  I am going to law school.  Needless to say I'm getting nervous.  But of course, if I wasn't getting nervous I would be a freak.
