Been under a rock for like a year so it explains the lateness on these. Also, I don't know the names of the albums (sad result on the Ipod screen...).

Wolf Parade
Arcade Fire
Bloc Party
Death Cab for Cutie
Death From Above 1979
Franz Ferdinand
Brazilian Girls
She Wants Revenge
Gorillaz

And, best of all: The Strokes (First Impressions of Earth) and Belle and Sebastian (Portrait of Life??!?) Both AWESOME...

oh, My Morning Jacket is fantastic!

'It Still Moves' should probably be added to the list of albums people need to hear...that's a classic to me.

Guys, I'm so excited for this MMJ love!  My bf is their lighting guy  :)

I guess you know the band then...they seem like cool guys to me.  Really an original sound.

Eh, not really... I've been introduced, but haven't really talked.  Having had some rather embarassing star-struck encounters, I've learned it's sometimes better just to keep my mouth shut (I'm sorry, Jay Hernandez!).  The bf said the tour was pretty laidback relative to most... no drama.  They had a total "Almost Famous" moment in Madison, WI, when the band went to a college house party  :)

Albums everyone in the universe should listen to and if they did, there'd be world peace

Ambulance LTD - Ambulance LTD (Buy it, download it, or check out their MySpace so you can hear their song, or PM me and I'll send you the files or something)

A friend of mine has this ... it's pretty cool.  I saw them open for The Walkmen, also...and it was a good set.

CBGB

I'd agree with a lot of the bands mentioned already, Arctic Monkeys, Wolf Parade, Wilco, CLYHSY,etc.

A few others I'd mention:

We Are Scientists-With Love and Squalor
Belle and Sebastian-The Life Pursuit
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins-Rabbit Fur Coat
The Hold Steady-Separation Sunday (not brand new, came out last year)
The New Pornographers-Twin Cinema
Okkervil River-Black Sheep Boy
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists-Shake the Sheets

I know a few of those aren't brand new, but they're all relatively new. If you're looking for straight rock, my list probably isn't the most helpful, although The Hold Steady, We Are Scientists, and the New Pornographers should be helpful.

yes. We Are Scientists toured with a band called Speechwriters LLC for a bit. SWLL haven't broken yet, but I fully expect them to in the near future.

Also: CBGB--its a shame about your namesake.  :(

Messily

Another one I just remembered:

Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die.  The best way I can think of to describe them is like Belle and Sebastian meets They Might Be Giants, but that doesn't quite cover it.  They're great, though.

A friend of mine saw We Are Scientists a few weeks ago in Toronto, unfortunately they didn't make the trip up here to Ottawa. He said it was the best show from a new band that he could remember, and this is from a guy who goes to a lot of shows. They show a lot of potential, and write catchy songs. I thought a lot of the reviews were kind of unfair to them, but that's how it goes I guess.

As for CBGB's, what's the latest? I'd heard it had basically been run into the ground, and was pretty much a dump these days. It's not completely gone is it? Visiting that place is one of my life goals (sad as that may be).

they're also getting kicked out of their lease. bad news all around. but i hear they do have a new spot lined up, so maybe all hope isn't lost.
