M16 Agent, I find it rather humorous you posted a link to www.fuckthesouth.com, but you applied to Vandy, doesn't that seem a little strange.  Last time i checked Tennessee was right in the middle of the SE.  I do agree with some of the opinions on that website, even from a Southern perspective, but you might want to check your info before posting a site like that.

I think the site is funny.  I do not think that it's the revealed Word of God.  I would not have a problem living in Nashville or Durham... that's why I applied to those schools. I might have a problem living in little southern podunk towns, but that is irrelevant here. So no, that doesn't seem strange.  Perhaps you should acquire a sense of humor before trying to point out hypocrisies that simply do not exist.

It's amazing that there would even be a need to convert.  Given the overwhelming evidence in favor of capitalism, calling yourself a socialist carries with a much-deserved stigma.

perhaps some people are willing to give up prosperity for more equality.

At risk of moving this to the haterade section, I'll respond.  If some people are so willing, they may do so privately.  However, the idea that they can use government to force others to make the same "choice" flies in the face of freedom.  If I have a right to my life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, then you can't tell me to sacrifice anything for some nebulous notion of "equality."

And I'm finished.  You can have the last word if you want.

i consider myself a moderate. some of the posts in this thread are making me cringe though. like the 70% tax idea. or the smug self-righteousness in some posts.

Milton friedman goes into a good discussion about equality in his book Free To Choice.

Basically he says there are three types of equality, which are equality before God or Natural equality to be politcally correct, equality of opportunity, and equality of outcome. the big divide between libearls and conservatives is conservatives take the deontological approach stating everyone has the same oppurtunity as success is personal responsiblity, whereas, liberals take the teleogical approach citing capitalism is unfair due to the uneqaulity of outcome.  Now, people could sit down and argue socialism versus capitalism but the results speak for themselves.  Look at the quality of living of nations that have embraced free markets such as hong kong versus socilist regimes.  i will end my arguement with a favored quote from my hero

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it [...] gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself-Milton Friedman

As I said in my last post some of the things on the website are rather funny, but coming from a southern perspective, the site is very rude and sterotypical.  From a Northern Perspective I am sure the website is rather hysterical, but hell how many people do you know from the south.  The website throws everyone into an ignorant catergory.  So before you start posting links, how about you start thinking first.  You says f#ck the south then, apply to two southern schools, hmmmm that makes alot of since.  So hey f#ck you.
