My EFC is $3,105.

I don't know where they come up with that number. I don't work or file taxes. I just put that I got $12,000 in cash last year under "Other Income" or somewhere.

Hopefully it looks like I can get the subsidized loans.

20k. Which is just plain stupid. I live in NYC, so the 45k I made last year doesn't exactly make me well-off. But I'm married, so I guess that hurts me. We've got all of 1k in savings.

Strange thing: I made a correction to lower my income a bit, and my EFC went up!

My EFC = $814 ... Coincidentally the same amount as my Federal and State Tax returns combined...

Is this my new magic number? Or is it just another way of the universe telling me, "You didn't earn sh!t last year!"?

what the hell?  i had 1100 in fed tax and my efc was 3125!    ??? >:( ???  i think i screwed up or something.  i'm poor as hell.  does and efc of 3125 reflect need based aide (poverty) or what?

It's the government, it's probably as complicated and illogical as humanly possible

I work full time and take classes to make me a fulltime student and my EFC(having a 100% of my household fulltime student) was about $10500... I don't have that kind of money but I am hoping the nice folks at Sallie Mae will lend me some more money. A lot more money.

My EFC is a bit more than $10k.  I just spoke with a very kind FAFSA help person who said that the EFC is usually around 1/3 of one's AGI, plus savings.  Like beckett above, I live and work in NYC, so my big $32k salary doesn't take me very far, and I won't be working when I'm in LS as I only applied to FT programs.  I explained this to the FAFSA dude, and he said that if you tell the schools your circumstances, they will likely either disregard the FAFSA EFC or ask you to fill in a correction with altered info (e.g., putting in estimated income for 2007 instead of 2005).  He confessed that this wasn't a very good system.

I win- 47484. For future reference: do not work, get married, own investment property and let your spouse run their own business. And definitely don't sell a house a month before completing your FAFSA! The only bright side is I actually have money in the bank to pay instate tuition. The down side is it was supposed to go to the downpayment on a house  :-\
