If you want SF, go to USF. There's a ton of alumni money coming into the school and USF is plugged into city politics and government. There's a pretty broad alumni network in the Bay Area. They gave you a very nice chunk of change. I strongly encourage you to check out the brand new classrooms and law library, and then check out the main campus, especially Lone Mountain and St. Ignatius Church. USF is beautiful, it's in the most beautiful part of SF, on the top of the hill, and it's literally down the street from City Hall.

If you want Sac, go to Davis.

What he said.

In your situation, I'd find it hard to pass up that scholarship at USF.  Davis is a great choice though; maybe a better one in the long run.

It's just hard to believe you could get into Davis and get major money from USF and still not get into Hastings.  Hastings, of course, even with no money, would be the solution to this dilemma if you had applied/been accepted there.

If you just can't make this decision, you should apply Hastings next cycle if you didn't this cycle.

What kind of law do you want to practice?  Even if you don't know specifically, do you know you want to go into government?  BIGLAW?  Start your own firm?  That might help here.

I continue to believe that the options out of USF will be considerably more limited than either Davis or McGeorge.  Davis has a small class, people really enjoy the school, and they place reasonably well in SF.  Have you looked into placement numbers for USF?  I know Hastings doesn't even place that well upon graduation, what about USF?  Also, go to USF and ask students where they are working, not only if they have a job.

Good luck to ya.

No go on Hastings

I visited McGeorge on there legal scholar day,I was marginally impressed, I went by Davis just to look at King Hall, definately got a more scholarly feel. I am leaning toward wanting to work in a small firm or doing something in gov't, not too interested in Big Law...but with that said, who knows what I will want to do after my first couple of years in school.

Here is an update

still no money from Davis
acceptance to USD - no money yet

and  the out of states

Minnesota w/ 5k - I really like this school, but I have to consider whether I could deal with leaving CA indefinately. But if I got instate after the first year this looks like the most bang for my buck.

Colorado - No Money
UNC- No Money

I'm in a similar predicament. Big scholarship at USF and an acceptance at Davis. I'm going to visit both schools next week. As I understand it, Davis will send financial aid information no earlier than mid-June (way past USF's 1st deposit deadline). There are some different grants that are available to Davis law students (of course nothing too wild as it IS a public school). Regardless, I'm pretty sure Davis will be my choice. Best of luck to you and maybe I'll be seeing you and mjca in August!!!! :D

Just curious.. why were you only marginally impressed with McGeorge? I may end up going there, just wondering what you weren't so impressed with.

iyl,

I was impressed with the campus and the some of the professors, but some of the students were disappointing. I sat in on a class that utilized the socratic method and most of the students being called on could not answer the questions the professor was asking, many of which actually opted for a joke over a serious answer. The next week I sat in on a class at USD and it was like night and day, these students were on it and prepared when they were called on (and yes they were being called on at random as well). Maybe I just got a bad first impression. However the McGeorge alumni impressed me, they were very accomplished and inspiring.

I verified the 23k from USF is for a maintaining a 2.0, which makes that option suddenly more attractive. Why is McGeorge held in a higher regard, compared to USF?

Davis, Davis, a thousand times Davis.  It'll be worth the investment.  Also, consider that your cost of living in Davis will be way lower than your cost of living in San Francisco, which at least evens out the money situation a little bit.

Also, there are advantages to being attached to a nice large university...
