Is my topic "played out"??
« on: July 27, 2004, 09:30:12 PM »
Basically, my PS will center around being from a mixed racial backround, my experiences, (called "mutt", "halfbreed" in high school), and how it has led me to law school, and why I would like to eventually like to work to improve civil rights/racial equality. Is this topic kinda "played out" ?

It could sound tired if you don't address the right way.

Don't ask me what the right way is though.

i think most PSs pretty much suck.... mostly they are too long-winded, IMO.

Other than your racial heritage, how do civil rights touch you?  I think you'd have to make it more personal.  I dunno.  Maybe grandpa was beat up trying to vote and you saw it.  I dunno, just think ing out loud.

I think your topic could work well.  If you have one particular experience (of racism or courage in the face of racism or something), you might want to start out with that anecdote, and then discuss how this has influenced your desire to study law.

Just a thought.

i think that it is a good topic, and it goes without saying that you want to do it well.

have you taken steps to improve civil rights and racial inequality in any way since those experiences in high school?  if you can show the adcomms that you have acted to address those issues -- no matter how small or large the may have been -- they will be more inclined to believe that you have a vested interest in tackling those concerns after law school.  sure, i am sure that people have written about that topic before, but wtf -- what topic hasn't been addressed?

good luck.

"I want to go to law school to fight [injustice / inequality / etc]" is definitely played out. The fact that some teenagers picked on you in high school is not quite enough to hang a PS on.
