should I check the 'other' box?

I'm a little unsure of whether I should be checking the 'other' box under race/ethnicity. I am a white African - I'm half Mauritian and half South African. My mother's family arrived in South Africa from Britain in the early 1700s and my dad's family arrived in Mauritius from France in 1711. I grew up in Mauritius, and came to the US for undergrad in 2001.
So I'm white, but I'm also African. I don't feel that checking the caucasian/white box adequately represents my background. I'd appreciate any thoughts and/or suggestions. Thanks!

Also, does anyone have any information on international student applicants, and how this effects an application?

Usually the "other" box leaves a line for you to identify.  If you're more comfortable doing that, then surely check it.  You could also add a diversity statement to your application.
