I thought the Google search would be better - for one thing, it runs over Google's servers instead of this one and should be much faster in that regard.  Plus, it's Google.

You can still search the old way with the search button in the top menu - but that might change at some point too.  You really think the built-in search works better than Google?

I understand the benefit to searching over different options.  Google gives you one box and that's it.  For the homepage, there was only ever one box anyway - and people doing searches from there probably aren't looking for a specific post.  For now, the search button still takes you to the built-in search.  It uses a lot of server resources though...

I always had a hard time getting results with the old search method.  It was nice to be able to select/deselect which topic area to search in, but the search returned too many partial matches and took too long to complete.  At least with a faster search, it won't take as long to try 2 or 3 different searches.
