Send more letters than they ask for?
« on: July 27, 2004, 12:30:53 AM »
Ok, two questions. I'm using the LSAC recommenders service and should have three recs by the time I apply.

1. Do you think it will hurt me if I send all three of my recs to schools that only ask for two (or one).
2. Once one starts applying, can they control which letters to send where or does LSAC send all of your letters everywhere you apply?

i read today on lsac.org that if you have a school-specific recommendation, you should have the recommender send the rec directly to the school and not to lsac.  i may be remembering that wrong, however.

I wouldnt recommend sending more than the requested number of rec's. Its best to follow each school's application directions. You may want to check with each school, though.

ok but if you're using LSAC to send all of the letters, do you have control over which letters go to which schools or does LSAC just send all of them to every school?

No LSAC does not allow picking and choosing the LOR's.  Whatever is in your file gets sent to each law school. ie, all law schools get a copy of ALL LORs you have sent in.

Actually, this isn't true anymore.  LSAC has changed their policy and you can designate which recs are going to which school.  I don't know exactly how it works, since I'm only doing 3, and just expect all 3 to get sent, but if you go on lsac's website and look around under recs, it should be pretty easy to find.

if your recs are good i dont see how an extra one could hurt you. i just read that lsdas will take up to three recs and send them all out to the schools you are applying to in one single file.

It is my understanding that they send the letters in the order received, so if your school only wants to letters, they send the first two received, and so on.

Hi! I just came here to see if anyone else had info on how LSAC is handling LORs now. I know their previous policy was to send out the number of LORs a school requested, and they sent them out in the order they were received by LSAC. You couldn't request which LORs went to which school. But I saw a pop-up on their website about a month ago saying something like "Attention applicants for 2005, our LOR policy will change in September. After that, you'll be able to specify which letters will go to which schools." I've been back to the site several times since then trying to find out more about this, and I can't find anything. I guess I'm just going to call them tomorrow to find out what's going on. I'll post after I find out.
