hey ruskie

i'm 1L at a T20 on the east coast and am sort of sick of the cold weather [i'm a cali boy at heart]

after first sem. i'm top 16-35% and am thinking about putting a transfer app to boalt. am i competitive or would i be wasting my time? i graduated from a top UC with a bio degree and have 3 years neuroendocrinology lab experience and am looking to do IP law (and i know berkeley has a strong ip program)

please let me know if u have any input! thanks :)

i'm not all that familiar with the transfer criteria, but i know that there are some folks who came in from bottom of T1, even T2 schools.  i don't know where most were ranked. i do know that one guy came from a bottom of T1 school and was ranked 6th in his class.

boalt is not as politically homogenous as most people imagine, so there is a variety of opinions regarding yoo's memo and yoo himself.  there are those who, like me, are so appalled and offended by the memo, that they refuse to take yoo's classes as a matter of principle.  there are those who are able to separate yoo in the classroom from yoo in the political arena, and there are those who are fond of him and his work.  he's a frequent speaker at the federealist society's events and he's the subject of a semester-long protest in the front courtyard. basically, the opinion just depends on who you talk to.

1) Berkeley was my dream school.

2) I will end up at one of the two firms at which I will be this summer.

That sort of sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy there Ruskie :P.

It's just the reality of how these things work.  When you clerk at a firm during your 2L summer, you are basically guaranteed to get a permanent position offer with them at the end of that summer, because most firms will not take on clerks they wouldn't hire and most firms do the majority of their hiring through their 2L summer classes.  It is possible that I could get my offers and go through OCI again as a 3L, but, quite frankly, it's VERY difficult to get a job this way because only a tiny percentage of firms will interview 3L's.
