Is Temple really in a bad area?

Temple Ugrad and Temple Law '09 here.  I would not live in the area immediately surrounding campus, but I also wouldn't be concerned at all about ATTENDING school in North Philly.  Temple does have the third largest police force in Pennsylvania, and the Temple cops are great--willing to escort folks to their cars, etc.  I never felt unsafe at Temple as a ugrad.

Folks are listing lots of good neighborhods in Philly.  If you a little older (like me) or you like it on the quiet side, there are many communities in the burbs along the regional rail lines that'll do, too.  I'll likely stay in lower bucks while attending Temple, but I'm already comfortable and settled here.

Hey, thanks for the response.  I'll be 29 later this year - so a little older, like you.  My partner and I will be looking for somewhere on the quiter side, nice enough neighborhood, etc., so I will check out some of the places people are mentioning.  I'm between Northeastern and Temple right now, so we'll see.  I will also check the Temple discussion board.

Well, I hope to see you in the fall.  I'm looking to do criminal work, too.  Likely on the "other" side, though. Check my thoughts in your other thread re:  school choice.

FWIW...I visited Temple on my East Coast swing in February, and, although impressed with the school and especially it's emphasis on trial ad...dude. That place is in the GHETTO. The campus itself is very urban, and, having gone to an undergraduate school modeled after UVa, I was not okay with it.

If only they could have taken Temple's programs and students and put them on Villanova's campus...Villatemple or Tempanova would have been a teriffic law school!

Same here. I haven't made it official, but looks like I'll be going to Temple next year. I may look like I'm 12, but I can take most grown men

How is driving to Temple? I plan on living in a good area of Philly and commuting most likely by car. Is it safe to take a car into Temple and drive out sometimes late at night after long hours in the library?

I was living on campus as an undergrad 10 years ago at Temple. Cars on the campus were not safe even when in the parking lots. Crack addicts would break in for as little as a few coins spotted in your car.  My friend had her battery stolen out of her car twice.  Hardly any of my friends kept their cars on campus on a regular basis.  we used mass transit and cabs most of the time. 
But, I have to say, the school has come a LOOONG way since 1996.  Myabe they have parking garages now or better on-campus security.  I loved Temple despite these issues and would go in a heartbeat to Temple Law if I wasn't already settled down with a family in Florida. I would not live near the area, but the school is so easily accessible  and I acutally enjoyed my 4 years there. 

One thing about Temple, u either really like ot or abhor it.  I strongly suggest a visit.  You can't go midline with this school.

Temple's campus is policed 24/7.  The lot for LS is on campus and w/in 1 block of the library.  No concerns.
