Canuck applying to States - financial HELP!
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:44:40 PM »
Somebody please explain what I do.  I am sure that the deadlines are approaching.  Can somebody in a similar situation or with the info on this subject break it down for me.
I need to know about applying for FAFSA, OSAP etc.
What is the best route to take.
THANKS
 ???

From my limited understanding, you're screwed. We are not eligible for FAFSA or any other federal/state program. And may I add that financial institutions are generally clueless about what it costs to study law in the US? Most will allow a max of 50,000. Hope you have a rich uncle willing to put up his house as garantee.

hahhahahahahahha

Sadly, it's all true.  You'll have to see if your province covers any financing for international study.  If not, the best you can do is a combination of private institutions (which means hella credit rating) and CanHELP (Google it, I'm too lazy to find it, sorry).  You can finance your education, but your loan payments are going to be ridiculous compared to all of the American kids around you.

This is why people never understand why I'd take a lesser school with scholarship over a T14 any day.  They figure a 200K loan is a 5-7 year deal.  For me, it's closer to 10-12 years.  MAJOR difference.

True, some provinces will help. I actually met someone studying marine biology in the US with full funding, on promise that she would subsequently return to her home province to practice. She was from Saskatchewan ...

As for CanHELP, I must warn you that my experience with them has been truly horrible. Going directly to financial institutions makes more sense. RBC might actually lend you up to 150K, as per their website.

Thanks for the tip, gilles!  I didn't know RBC had such a sweet deal going.  I'm going to look into that.

Wow, this really excites me!

And I've heard other horror stories about CanHELP as well.

I temporarily rescind my previous statement regarding your greatness.  Care to explain this...

To apply for your Royal Credit Line for Students - Professional Designation, you will need:

Confirmation that you are enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary educational institution and pursuing one of the qualifying degrees

Does it apply to US schools too?
