Diversity Statement ISSUES!!

For those of you who wrote them, how did you organize them? What did you include - childhood? parents? hometown? heritage? school experiences? I am seriously lost on how to do this!!!

Vannabunny, aren't you hoping to go to IU? You don't need a diversity statement for IU.  I didn't write one for ND either.

Another school I'm applying to as a safety asks for one, and IU says that it's optional, so I'll probably send one w/ it as well

What did you put in the personal statement? Have you done anything unusual or had any different life experiences that you haven't addressed in the personal statement?

Quite a bit, actually. And a variety of things that don't seem to go together

I think a poorly written diversity statement is probably worse than none at all, so you probably want to focus on a few things that you can tie together nicely. Quite frankly I just skipped the diversity statement because I said almost everything worth saying on the PS. Where is your safety?

Pick one aspect of your background or life experience that's likely to be different from those of others applying to that school. Write a story about it. Don't explain it and how you would therefore contribute to the diversity of the class etc. Just tell the story and let it speak for itself. I did a little bit of each one, but tied it together with an overriding theme.

Redemption is right.  This is exactly how it should be done.

Diversity essays can only come from within.  Lay all your cards on the table.  honestly I spent like 4 months on my PS and Redemption and others thought it was just OK.  I spent like 1 week on my diversity essay (with help from red. mag. ect.) and they liked it alot.  Just remeber that diversity transcends race, religion, ect.  What makes you stand out?
