Columbia gave me $$ while NYU gave me $0, so I don't see any reason to pay $50k for NYU versus $10k for Columbia.

Did you assume you wouldn't get $ from NYU? NYU hasn't made its financial offers yet--they often hand out large sums with the financial aid package in March/April.

I didn't qualify for the RTK and similar scholarships at NYU because I want to work for The Man for a while after graduation.

I could have applied for need-based aid from NYU, but since Columbia comped me $40k x 3 yrs without my having to apply or jump through any hoops, I figured why bother applying for need-based aid from NYU...

I'm pretty sure it's not all need-based.  They do also have Dean's scholarships which don't require a committment not to work for The Man, and I don't think are need based.  I guess you may have to submit a financial aid form to be considered for them though.

It strikes me that it's worth it if you have any interest at all in NYU.  But if you'd prefer a mostly free ride at Columbia to free ride at NYU there's certainly no reason to bother.

actually NYU is one of the few schools that doesn't require Need Access or Profile...

They only want FAFSA, and a pretty short proprietary form
