it's a stay of execution while the court considers the case. i wouldn't read anything at all into it.

I agree.  Also, the stay had been imposed by the eighth circuit 8-1; Alito, having just been assigned as that circuit's Justice that very day, may simply have been reluctant to question their judgement.  This doesn't tell us much of anything. 

I'm more excited about the fact that Alito explicitly endorsed originalism at the confirmation hearings, something not even Roberts did.
