Each school does it differently  - it isn't standardized like the federal financial aid.  Reading each school's financial aid forms should give you a clue, and if you call them, I'm sure they'll give you the straight dope. 

I can only speak for Suffolk because that is the only school I've gotten to know seriously.  They consider your parents finances, REGARDLESS of your personal situation, if you're under 24.  If you're over 24 and you haven't lived with them for over a year and they haven't claimed you as a dependant for the last year or two, they'll consider you independent.  At least that is what I recall, don't quote me. 

But you'll have to talk to each school.
