what are they teaching kids these days?

when i TA-ed linguistics 101 a couple of years ago, it was much less about terminology and formalism and much more about language and society and language and the brain issues. ling 201 was much more about formalism and concepts of linguistic theory, but skipped the terminology.

wikipedia suggests that portmanteau as fusion of meaning (or grammatical function, as they put it) is a term of art, while portmanteau as fusion of form and meaning is colloquial.

haha i know tra, i read the rules, i just wanted to be welcoming and save all the trouble of googling etc... most of the info. i have is because i asked people who were nice enough to tell me (as others on this board have been as well), esp. when googling was not productive.  besides, i know it is not in my power to determine who is worth having around or not!  if you guys want to make those decisions, you have seniority and i shall yield, but i just want to help out when i can and try not to exclude those who seem to be nice and making some kind of effort!

This thread sickens me.  Arhodg, you have so clearly broken the rules.  We don't tell newbies the acronyms because if they can't figure them out on their own (by doing a search for example) then they aren't worth having around.
