Is it okay to submit a diversity statement if the app doesn't specifically ask for one?

I sent in a diversity statement to the schools that didn't request one with a short letter attached.  Basically saying: I know you don't request additional information, but I wanted to provide this short statement to give you a better perspective of my personal experiences (or whatever).  I figure the worst they can do is ignore it.

Agreed. How could it possibly hurt (if it's written well)?

You also beatnik, I hope to hear good things from you (I have a softsot for those returning to school  ;))!  I realy don't see how it could hurt.  I couldn't imagine an adcomm saying, "OMG and extra statement?!  DING!," even if a "Umm.. I have to much crap to read, I'm going to ignore this" is entirely possible.  If you're a borderline candidate like me, I think they'd welcome the extra info... Good luck!
