It's like reading Ulysses for the first time and realizing that it's not "literature" in the way you would expect.

You're not joking! I just finished Ulysses, and it about killed me. I wish I could say I enjoyed it... I quickly read The Old Man and the Sea to flush the stream of consciousness out of my system. And I'm now reading McCullough's 1776. I highly recommend both it and John Adams.

Let's bring this thread back to life!  I've been obsessively reading the Warriors series - I know ... it's a series for 8-14 year olds, but it's really entertaining   I love animal fantasy/fiction, so yay!  If you like Watership Down, Redwall, or Tailchaser's Song ... then I highly recommend Erin Hunter's Warriors and Seekers series.  READ THEM!  Also, light, young adult fiction is perfect for the harried law student

The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, 3rd edition.  I'm reading all the E&E's (and fully outlining them) over this year before I start next fall.  Once I finish that I'm moving on to Hornbooks.  Watch out!
