Study Abroad PS

Has anyone written a personal statement about their study abroad experience?  In a lot of the books they say to avoid this because it often turns out terrible.  However, I (like a lot of people) studied abroad for a year in college--1/3 of the time i've been there.  it seems like it would be ridiculous NOT to write about this.  does anyone have any advice for how to approach a PS like this?  i want to talk about what i learned from the french without sounding like a complete retard or making huge generalizations about the French.  any help would be appreciated!

Make sure you downplay that fact that you are advantaged. 

EDIT:  I make the presumption that you are advantaged as many students cannot afford to do study abroad.  If you are not advantaged, make sure you try to incorporate the fact that you paid for the study abroad by yourself (through fin. aid, scholarships, and/or loans).
