Crap Criminal Record Problem
« on: December 18, 2005, 05:34:03 PM »
So this is rather embarassing...there was this other thread on this board that mentioned the criminal history requirements for the T30 law schools, and I was very surprised to see that NYU was listed as one of the schools that ask you for charges too, not just convictions.

Last year I was charged with disorderly conduct (stupid story), turned out they thought I was drunk when I actually wasn't, so the charges were droppe. Anyways, I would have defineatly mentioned this to NYU had I read their application a bit more thoroughly, but I thought only Cornell and Duke out of the T14 asked for charges as well as convictions.

Well now that I've been accepted to NYU, I'm at a dilemma...I didn't particularly want to attend NYU, but I also don't want to get stung with a rescinding offer of admissions. What should I do? If I write them a letter are they pretty much going to ding me?
Choosing Between: Chicago, Michigan, NYU, UPenn, GULC
Declined: Virginia, Duke, UCLA, George Washington, Notre Dame, Rejected: None yet
Waiting: Harvard, Yale, Columbia

They won't ding you, and if you aren't going to go there it probably won't matter.  Most applications have a provision that states that you must update them to any changes to their application information. It won't likely affect your chances of admission.

I think you ought to disclose this discrepancy to NYU through an addendum. Since the charges were dropped, it's not as bad as if you withheld from them a conviction. I don't think I, nor anyone else here can predict what NYU would do. Even if NYU does ding you, you have other admissions in hand.

If they were dropped, are they still on your criminal record? Not sure how that works.. :)

If there's no record, why tell them? If there is, well, it's better than getting caught later on about trying to cover it up.

If there's no record of the charges, how can they ever know? :)

So much for innocent until proven guilty, eh?

I'd understand if they ask if you have any convictions or charges pending against you, but really, how is it NYU's job to evaluate things of which you were cleared?

If they're looking to see if you have a history of DUIs, and a few of them were only charged but wiped away due to some program, I would think the convictions that would remain would be enough.

Disclose.  If the discrepancy surfaces later, the bar may bite you.

ditto. even if you DON'T attend nyu. can't the bar, depending on the state, look into any/all of your ls apps?

nyu won't rescind the offer based on your story - but i would disclose it. if in doubt, call them and ask.
