I applied to 17 schools and the only one that had required a specific essay were Penn and Cornell, which wanted an essay about why I wanted to come to their institutions. Other than that, I used the same personal statement for each and every place I applied to.
I can't remember exactly, but a few of the schools *may* have given "suggestions" on what topic to write the personal statement, but I just ignored them and submitted what I had already written.
And just to give you some insight, I wrote about why I was considering law school (since I'm an engineering major), talked about my evolving experiences in the law (from high school through college), and the skills that I have that I feel would be beneficial to studying the law.
It was pretty boring, come to think of it... at least when compared to some of the personal statement topics I hear you guys suggesting on this board; but, it was a safe topic, and i think it served me well...
