Disillusioned Parents
« on: December 17, 2005, 07:29:14 PM »
My mom really feels better about reading all of my rejections to me on the phone because of the BS that they write in them, and she always spits it back out to me.

"But honey, this year they've had over 8,000 applications and only 250 spots!"

I knew the way you know about a good melon.

I was reading this thread earlier, and I thought I could exempt my Dad from this list...and then I sent him an email about getting the call from UPenn and he wrote back, "That's awesome on UPenn!! Really, who actually calls prospective students?!?!" Ah, ignorant parents... Ha ha ha ha....

Gotta love 'em, though.

I was trying to explain to my folks why I hadn't applied to many schools due to my numbers--I explained how the handful of students in my index range who were getting into this one law school were usually URMs who had done something like rescue orphans in Rwanda.

My mom's rejoinder: "Well, you built houses for Habitat for Humanity!"

...in highschool, 10 years ago--for *a week*.

sigh.

I think the title is supposed to be "delusional" parents; we're usually the ones that are disillusioned into thinking we can only get in a few places. But without knowing my stats at all, my mom says "Of course you've got a shot at Berkeley." And I maybe do, but still.

i have this friend who says, "you're amazing. you'll get in everywhere you applied!" so i have been taking to call her everytime i get a rejection or deferral. however, she says now, "you're amazing. you'll get in everywhere you applied!"

oh wait, same thing.

i guess when i get more rejections it might start to make sense to her that there was no way in hell i was getting into some of the schools on my list?

alas, why did i apply?

Fortunately I never had to deal with disillusioned parents when I applied to Law School last year and it definitely made the process easier.  My father went to Med School (which is even more competitive to get into than Law School) so he knew exactly what I was going through.  It also helped that the first two I heard from ended up being acceptances (unfortunately my only acceptances).  My parents were thrilled that I was going somewhere that they were quiet for the rest of the cycle

I'm so jeaous Michael.  My dad didn't even finish high school and got so mad about my lsat score (cause I went to an uber-competitive college and did well considering my massive courseload) and he even said he could do better just walking in and taking it!  My mom is a little better, she went to uncompltitive undergrad and grad programs, so usually just says, I can't imagine what it's like doing all this for hard schools!

My best friend is even trouble!  All he says is  you'll get in everywhere and, knowing I applied to 22 schools, ask why I didn't apply to W&L!  I said cause my numbers suck and allo he could say is you want a shot at everywhere don't you???

Alas...  yay for LSD at least!

BTW, I love bender's way of looking at things.  ;)
