I saw The Family Stone.  It is not a comedy.  In fact, it is extremely depressing.  It's a great, great movie though (and I don't usually rush out to see this sort of film).

Def. not an independent.  It was probably marketed during "girl-oriented" tv as a romantic comedy type dealie, which it wasn't at all.  There was an all-star cast.  Trust me, if it were independent we wouldn't get it in my town.

I'm in a college/old people town.  The old people usually win, since the college students rarely stick around more than 3-6 years at a time.
