begining a sentence with "But" HELP

i'm no grammer whiz so I have to ask is it okay to start a sentence with But?? i remember in grade school it was a big no no, but my friends who are english nerds say that it is okay...but then my mom is like "you have to change it" in that nagging mom way.......any advice to But or not to But??

It is entirely acceptable.  While not an English nerd, I did major in English.  This is one of those elementary school rules that was meant to be broken.

But is fine. And is fine too.

The only places where these sorts of things are inappropriate is when you were doing a really formal paper.
