That is fantastic. While the teammates go play in the NBA, gunners go straight to assistant coaching jobs.

And gunners definitely pound the court with their palms. Really hard, so you know how intense their d is.

not to split hairs even more, but i believe a gunner is someone who not only does all of the above (i.e, answers all the questions, does extra reading, etc.) but also is intellectually inferior.  they do all of this extra work, make it worse on everyone, but still have trouble being at the top of the class...  

Yeah that's how I've always thought of it as well...though it doesn't really matter. 

In law school I suspect I'll like to discuss more than answer things...don't know if that's a good thing.  I was def. a gunner in HS though...not to annoy the students (they were on my side if not joining in) but to let the teacher know he/she wasn't as cool as they thought they were.  This one teacher kept saying things that were just plain wrong (and we all knew it) but would keep telling us how she went to Brown, so she would know better than us (just like that, too!  ).  So  I'd correct her openly in class all the time--in fact, it became a game among the students (oh, the memories...)

I apparently pissed her off so badly that when she became one of like 6 vice principals in my school she attempted to change my final grades for classes.  Luckily, other teachers had warned me about her so I got signed transcripts from my counselor and the comp recorded what changes were made and by whom....so then she was fired!

exactly.  they get the admiration of a few people for their effort, but their ineptitude eventually wins out.

Covert Gunner: a person that sits in the back, prepares well, doesn't respond to questions, waits for someone to mess up and then shoots them down/crushes their argument.

I'd call that a passive-aggressive sniper.

I think most people on this site will have gunnerish moments (not the same as being a gunner).  Unless it's merely the anonymity of this board that encourages everyone to speak up.

I've been told that an objective rule of thumb is that someone who raises his or her hand more than once a class is a likely gunner. Apparently, the person who makes, for example, five irrelevant comments a class is the gunner that everyone hates, while the person who speaks during every class with high quality contributions is still gunnerish.
