What if your ugly?
« on: December 02, 2005, 04:59:41 PM »
I'd say that fat, ugly people probably have it worse than African-Americans and other URM's growing up. I live in the South and nobody ever made fun of kids because they were black, but if you were fat- thats open season. One girl missed a week of school and everyoen assumed she had killed herself because everyone was so mean to her.

Why don't these people get URM status?

You can do something about being fat and ugly. You can't do as much about your race.

Yeah, okay, I can tell you've not had a problem with it.

My cousin with the gland issues would probably disagree.

Are you fat and ugly?  Let me help you CHING CHING CHING Cash in on your disadvantaged status!

The truth: How many people would come forward? "Yes, I'm fat/ugly. Can someone finally cut me a break?"

The real truth: URM status can get you credit, not because you've had it rough in just ANY respect, but because your education, economics and social standing are all factors that are directly threatened if you are a URM in this country. The overweight and not conventionally attractive people among us do not necesarily get a worse education, have less money or are habitually viewed as criminals or deviants.

The OP makes a good point.  I think being poor, overweight, bad at English, and probably many other characteristics that I can't think of at the moment are much more likely to get you discriminated against than being an URM.  Unfortunately, those characteristics are much more subjective, or shall we say, not as 'black and white' (pun intended.)

Although it's not as bad in some ways as URM's discrimination, some argue it is worse because it is the only remaining acceptable prejudices.

Heh, except for gay-bashing, which is, you-know, a party platform.

sizism is pretty bad.

while people are starting to come around to the idea that gay folk ain't the devil (at least in my neck of the woods, not so much in the hinterlands of America) - people still are horrible to the overweight and ugly. and view it as right.

and it's not like people shouldn't try to stay healthy, but some people just aren't naturally skinny.
